9/11 to be remembered with 2,977 flags on Mudd Field
Members of the Washington University in St. Louis College Republicans will spend the evening of Sept. 10 on Mudd Field planting 2,977 flags — one for each life lost on 9/11. Junior Kaitlyn Cullen says it’s important that those too young at the time to comprehend the tragedy reflect on it now.
WUSTL Libraries receive grant to implement open-source software
The Washington University Libraries have received a $50,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The grant will allow the library system, led by University Librarian Jeffrey Trzeciak, to implement Hydra, a powerful open-source software system that facilitates collaboration among institutions that want to share their digital collections and link them to related materials held elsewhere.
STL To Do: LouFest
Steven Rosenblum, who works in Arts & Sciences, recommends checking out LouFest this weekend, adding that the music festival is family-friendly. Founded by WUSTL’s Brian Cohen, the two-day event features four stages of music in Forest Park. Highlights include Outkast, Arctic Monkeys, Cake and Grouplove.
Bon Appétit premieres new dishes across campus
If you haven’t eaten on campus lately, you may not know about some tasty new fare. Bon Appétit Executive Chef Pat McElroy says his staff spent the summer creating new, original recipes. Check out the green chile pork tacos or the red pepper-and-spinach frittata.

Some 1,740 students from across America and the globe moved into the South 40 area of Washington University’s campus last week. New students say they are eager both to help St. Louis face its challenges and to explore all it has to offer.
Service First, fair offer first-year students opportunity to make impact
First-year students will volunteer at 10 local schools on Saturday, Aug. 30, before attending the all-class Service Fair, showcasing 50 community service organizations. Stephanie Kurtzman, director of the university’s Community Service Office, calls service a win-win-win.
Stratton named associate dean of undergraduate residential learning
Jill Stratton, PhD, has been named associate dean of undergraduate residential learning at Washington University in St. Louis, effective immediately. Sharon Stahl, PhD, vice chancellor for students, said Stratton’s new title reflects both the important role she plays in the university community as well as her expanding responsibilities.
Washington University introduces safety and security app
The Washington University Sentinel, a new safety and security mobile app for the Danforth and Medical campuses, is now available. The app is free and provides students, faculty and staff easy access to emergency numbers, crime alerts and safety tips.
The Lofts of Washington University development opens for business, students
The Lofts of Washington University, a new $80-million mixed-use development, brings green architecture, new residents and, at last, a grocery store to the Delmar Loop. On Saturday, Aug. 23, some 400 Washington University in St. Louis undergraduates will move into The Lofts’ 167 fully furnished three-bedroom, two-bedroom and efficiency apartments.
