Social activist and Black Entertainment Television commentator Jeff Johnson will present the annual Black Arts & Sciences Festival lecture at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 31 in Graham Chapel. His talk, sponsored by the University’s Assembly Series and the Association of Black Students, will suggest strategies for developing effective organizations for future leaders: “BECOME Activists: Building Effective Campus Organizations and Maintaining Excellence.”

Scientists believe they have found an explanation for a puzzling and serious complication of West Nile virus infection. Researchers showed that the virus can enter a nerve cell, replicate and move on to infect other nearby nerve cells. Viruses traveling this infectious pathway can break into the central nervous system, triggering a condition known as acute flaccid paralysis that leaves one or more limbs limp and unresponsive.

The Tamm Avenue bridge is scheduled to open Oct. 20.

This year Founders Day attendees will get a two-for-one bonus when the powerful political couple Mary Matalin and James Carville deliver the keynote address. Matalin and Carville, top political strategists for the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively, and married since 1993, will appear at the Alumni Association’s annual gathering to commemorate the founding of Washington University at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at the America’s Center in downtown St. Louis.

Acclaimed conductor Leonard Slatkin — music director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and conductor laureate of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra — will return to St. Louis as guest conductor for Washington University’s “Piano Extravaganza” at 7 p.m. Oct. 28. Presented by the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences, “Piano Extravaganza” will mark the formal opening of the University’s newly renovated 560 Music Center, located at 560 Trinity Ave. in University City. The concert will feature performances by more than a dozen student, faculty and alumni pianists, including Seth Carlin, professor of music in Arts & Sciences, and Hugh Macdonald, Ph.D., the Avis H. Blewett Professor of Music in Arts & Sciences.

Oct. 13 9:55 p.m. — Complainant reported that uknown persons stole a framed picture of one of the founders of Beta Theta Pi fraternity from the library of the house. Oct. 14 5:52 p.m. — Officer on patrol observed than an access control arm in Parking Lot #32 had been broken. 5:54 p.m. — A student reported the theft of $50 from her purse, which had been left unattended in a backstage room at Edison Theatre. 7:21 p.m. — A student overloaded a washing machine in the Park House residence hall causing it to overheat, burning the belts and creating smoke. Oct. 15 9:20 a.m. — A student in Shepley Hall reported an ongoing conflict between two other students.
