The 2009 seasonal flu vaccination program for School of Medicine employees has been a tremendous success. Given the high and early participation rate by WUSM faculty and staff, the originally published flu vaccination schedule has been shortened. If you have already received your free flu shot, thank you! If not, please protect yourself, your family, co-workers and patients by taking advantage of remaining vaccination offerings.
Scientists encouraged by new mouse model’s similarities to human ALS
A new mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) closely resembles the paralyzing disorder in humans, researchers at the School of Medicine report online in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Health Happening wellness fair to be held Oct. 28
School of Medicine employees will have a chance to test their fitness and learn about smoking cessation at the Health Happening wellness fair Oct. 28 from 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m.The fall Health Happening event, “Form, Fitness and Function,” is sponsored by the University’s Wellness Council.
Free, confidential HIV testing at WU’s Infectious Diseases Clinic
The School of Medicine’s Infectious Diseases Clinic offers free, confidential HIV testing Monday through Friday. No appointment is necessary. Individuals will receive a rapid HIV test using a finger-prick blood sample, with results available 20 minutes after testing. Testing is offered Monday – Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 – 3 p.m., and on Friday from 9 – 11 a.m. The clinic is located at 4570 Children’s Place, on the medical school campus.
Scans show learning ‘sculpts’ the brain’s connections
Spontaneous brain activity formerly thought to be “white noise” measurably changes after a person learns a new task, researchers at the School of Medicine and the University of Chieti in Italy have shown. The scientists also report that the degree of change reflects how well subjects have learned to perform the task.

David Callahan, Ph.D., public policy activist and scholar of academic integrity, will present “Creating a Culture of Integrity” at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, in Graham Chapel.
Milbrandt named head of genetics
Milbrandt Jeffrey D. Milbrandt has been named head of the Department of Genetics and the James S. McDonnell Professor at the School of Medicine. He brings a strength in basic and translational science to his new position and an appreciation of the expanding role of genetics in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of disease.

Creating a Culture of Integrity
David Callahan, public policy activist and author of The Cheating Culture: Why Americans Are Doing Wrong to Get Ahead and The Moral Center: How We Can Reclaim Our Country from Die Hard Extremists, Rogue Corporations, Hollywood Hacks and Pretend Patriots, will present “Creating a Culture of Integrity.” His talk, at 11 a.m., Thursday October 15 in Graham Chapel, is being hosted by the Center for Academic Integrity Conference, the Assembly Series and the Center for Ethics and Human Values. The event is free and open to the public.
