David B. Gray, PhD, died Feb. 12 of an apparent heart attack. He was 71. Gray became motivated to change what it means to be disabled after he was paralyzed in an accident in 1976. He joined the School of Medicine faculty in 1995 to conduct research and teach courses on social issues and disability.

Children treated for moderate acute malnutrition experience a high rate of relapse and even death in the year following treatment and recovery. A new study led by School of Medicine researchers has found that target weights and measures of arm circumference used in assessing the health of malnourished children are insufficient and that raising these thresholds could significantly lower the rate of relapse.

The School of Medicine’s 11th Annual Art Show is underway in the Farrell Learning and Teaching Center atrium on the Medical Campus. Visitors may view the art through Feb. 11.

The Rett Spectrum Clinic, a specialty clinic designed to care for and support children with Rett syndrome and related disorders including CDKL5, will open Jan. 30 on the Medical Campus.

Andwele M. Jolly, manager of business operations for the Divisions of Allergy & Immunology and of Rheumatology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been elected to the board of directors of the Missouri Foundation for Health.

Herbert W. Virgin IV, MD, PhD, the Edward Mallinckrodt Professor of Pathology and Immunology and head of the Department of Pathology and Immunology, has received several multiyear grants.

School of Medicine employees are invited to visit the annual Health Happening Fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, in the Eric P. Newman Education Center for free health screenings and information on a wide variety of health topics.

A search committee has been named to identify candidates for the position of executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine. Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton will chair the search committee. Larry J. Shapiro, MD, announced last week he will step down from the position but will remain at the helm until his replacement is named.

Samuel Achilefu, PhD, of the School of Medicine has won the St. Louis Award for 2014 for his work in creating cancer-visualizing glasses, which were used in surgeries for first time last year. He is the 87th person honored with the annual award since it was established in 1931.
