Washington University alumnus Mark Wronkiewicz (BS ’12) developed BrainCopter, one of the first brain-controlled applications for the iPad, while studying biomedical engineering at the university. His mentor, the School of Medicine’s Eric Leuthardt, MD, tries the application, which challenges players to use their thoughts to manipulate a flying brain icon past obstacles.

School of Medicine 2013 commencement speakers

Several Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital nurses received the 2013 Excellence in Nursing Award from St. Louis Magazine. The award honors nurses who have made a difference in the lives of their patients and colleagues.

John Exton, MD, PhD, the author of “Crucible of Science” — a book about the history of a unique laboratory at Washington University and of Carl and Gerty Cori, the biochemists who established it — will make opening remarks at the Carl and Gerty Cori Lecture on May 8.

Timothy Eberlein, chairman of the Department of Surgery, has been named the inaugural winner of the Pillar of Support Award. The award was created by the Academic Women’s Network at the School of Medicine to recognize outstanding support of female faculty.

Andrew Scharlach, PhD, the Eugene and Rose Kleiner Professor of Aging at the University of California, Berkeley, will deliver the 2013 Friedman lecture May 3 at the Eric P. Newman Education Center on the Washington University School of Medicine campus. The title of his lecture is “Creating Aging-Friendly Communities.”

Central Table, a new, 10,000-square-foot restaurant at the Barnes-Jewish Center for Outpatient Health, is scheduled to open for dinner starting May 1 and for all three meals May 6.

Eleven Washington University research teams will share $2.7 million in new grants from the Children’s Discovery Institute, a research collaboration between St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.

A recent case-study competition organized by the Health Professional Student Leadership Council allowed students from various programs to learn how to collaborate across disciplines to improve patient care.
