Spring forward and have a great break

Spring break begins this weekend, and, as students and faculty take a mid-March break, so does the daily Record email. The Record will be published Wednesday, March 13, then resume regular publication Monday, March 18. In the meantime, have a safe and relaxing break, and don’t forget to move your clocks forward Sunday, March 10.

Submit important dates now for 2013-14 Student Planner

Work is under way on the 2013-14 Student Planner, and students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit events and important dates. The spiral-bound student planner — given to all first-year students and available for purchase in the University Bookstore at the start of the academic year — contains a wealth of information about campus life, such as important dates (student events, holidays, breaks and deadlines), operational hours for campus facilities, contact numbers for key departments, and much more. Date submissions are open until April 20.

Men’s basketball team hosts NCAA second round March 9

The No. 17 Washington University in St. Louis men’s basketball team will host No. 10 Illinois Wesleyan University in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship Saturday, March 9, at the Field House. Game time is 7 p.m.

Engineers Week inspires current and future engineers

The annual Engineers Week, held Feb. 25-March 2, featured activities ranging from a paper airplane contest to a butter-sculpting competition to a lecture by cast members of the Discovery Channel’s “Mythbusters” television show. Read more to see video and photos.

Free vehicle inspections for employees, students Saturday

WUSTL’s Police and Parking Services departments, in partnership with Hartmann’s Towing, once again will sponsor a free Travelers’ Vehicle Inspection service to students, faculty and staff Saturday, March 2. The service is designed for those who anticipate traveling by car for Spring Break, March 10-16.

Men’s basketball to host NCAA first round​​

The No. 22 WUSTL men’s basketball team will host Spalding University in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship Saturday, March 2, at the Field House. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Students celebrate year of the water snake​

More than 150 students performed in this year’s Lunar New Year Festival, making it one of the largest cultural shows on campus. The student performances ranged from juggling to water sleeves (pictured) to a memorable Chinese Lion Dance. All proceeds from the show will go toward covering surgeries for orphans, including reconstructing unilateral cleft lips and palates.

Observing Black History Month

For nearly two decades, Black Anthology has been a strong tradition at WUSTL during Black History Month. Students write, perform and produce a politically conscious and artistically creative play highlighting issues affecting the African-American community. This year’s production took place Feb. 1 and 2 in Edison Theatre.

Collins starts as university’s senior creative director

Tracy Collins, who earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from WUSTL, returns to his alma mater after 20 years at the Creative Producers Group, a St. Louis-based agency. As WUSTL’s first senior creative director, Collins will help communicate the university’s brand through words and imagery.

New Stamps scholarship to benefit freshmen, fund ‘out-of-classroom’ experience

The new Stamps Leadership Scholarship will award the full cost of undergraduate attendance to an average of five incoming freshmen each year. This unique program also includes an enrichment fund of $10,000 per student to be used over four years to pay for outside-the-classroom educational experiences such as study abroad, research or unpaid internships.
