Nominate exceptional staff member for Gloria White award
Nominations now are being accepted for the Gloria W. White Distinguished Service Award. Named for the late Gloria White, who retired in 1997 as vice chancellor for human resources after 30 years, the award recognizes a staff member for his or her exceptional effort and contributions that result in the betterment of the university.
Staff member shares first-person account of overseas travel experience
Julie Kennedy, a senior publications editor in the Office of Public Affairs, shares this first-person account of her experience traveling to Paris. Kennedy was one of six employees selected to study abroad in an initiative to boost diversity on campus.
Applications for WUSTL staff study abroad program due Feb. 4
Up to six staff members will be chosen to travel to Santiago, Chile, in June for the second annual Global Diversity and Overseas Seminars Program. Applications are due by noon Feb. 4.
Danforth receives 2012 St. Louis Award
William H. Danforth, WUSTL chancellor emeritus and chairman of the board of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, received the prestigious 2012 St. Louis Award for outstanding leadership and commitment to the region.
CGI U application deadline Jan. 30
The final application deadline for students interested in participating in the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) is Wednesday, Jan. 30. The annual CGI U meeting brings together students,
youth organizations, topic experts and celebrities to discuss and
develop innovative solutions to pressing global challenges.
Jan. 20 talk focuses on university’s history
“Why Is It Called Washington University?” a presentation and book signing with Candace O’Connor, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the AT&T Foundation Multipurpose Room at the Missouri History Museum, 5700 Lindell Blvd. O’Connor wrote Beginning a Great Work: Washington University in St. Louis, 1853-2003.
University hosts four blood drives during academic year
Blood drives take place at
eight convenient locations across all Washington University in St.
Louis campuses. The next blood drive is Jan. 29. The drives are offered during morning, afternoon and evening hours.
Final CGI U application workshop Jan. 17
The final application workshop for students interested in the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) is slated for 12 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in Danforth University Center, Room 234. Up to 200 WUSTL students will be selected to participate in CGI U, which will be held April 5-7 on campus.
Obituary: Nobel Laureate Rita Levi-Montalcini
Rita Levi-Montalcini, PhD, a Nobel Prize-winning neurologist who performed the majority of her research at Washington University in St. Louis from 1947-1977, died Sunday, Dec. 30, at her home in Rome. She was 103.
Sports update Jan. 8: Women’s basketball gets by Chicago in UAA opener
Sophomore forward Melissa Gilkey scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to lead the No. 3 women’s basketball team to a 96-67 victory at the University of Chicago in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both teams Saturday in the Windy City.
