WUSTL welcomes family members to campus

More than 2,000 family members from across the U.S. – and some from across the world – are expected to visit WUSTL students Oct. 21-23 for Parent & Family Weekend. The weekend features 80-plus activities to help family members learn more about the university experience and extended St. Louis community.

M.I.L.D. at heart

Dance Marathon registration closes Oct. 14

Get your dancing shoes ready. Oct. 14 is the sign-up deadline to register for the annual Dance Marathon. Washington University in St. Louis hosts the student-run marathon, which will take place Saturday, Nov. 5, from 2 p.m.-2 a.m. in the Athletic Complex. Proceeds benefit Children’s Miracle Network of Greater St. Louis.

Danforth Dialogues set model for civil discourse

A new series, called the Danforth Dialogues, demonstrates how persons with profoundly different views can engage each other forcefully and respectfully. Sen. John C. Danforth moderated the first discussion between Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., and Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind. The series is co-sponsored by the John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics.

Grants enable students to carry out vision for social change

Through the Social Change Grant program, students are encouraged to use their creativity and knowledge to find solutions to world problems. The program provides $5,000-$6,000 in funding for a summer service project. The many projects — from water purification in Uganda to family planning in India — will be highlighted during an Oct. 12 showcase in Danforth University Center. 

Freshmen explore St. Louis via faculty-led field trips

A new program coordinated through the First Year Center encourages faculty members to share outside interests as a way of introducing freshmen to the city of St. Louis.As part of “St. Louis by the Dozen,” faculty members lead groups of 12 in an off-campus weekend adventure.

Memorial set for James McLeod

James E. McLeod, vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, will be remembered by the university community in a memorial service set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9. McLeod died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital of kidney failure after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 67.
