Service First volunteers brighten area public schools
WUSTL volunteers painted bleachers at University City High School Oct. 13, as part of Service First. Through this annual community service event, organizers work with principals of KIPP: Inspire Academy, St. Louis and University City public schools to identify needs.
WUSTL alumna named 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year
2012 graduate Elizabeth Phillips was named the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year, as announced at a ceremony Sunday in Indianapolis. Phillips is the third NCAA Division III student-athlete to win the award, joining Ashley Jo Rowatt of Kenyon College (2003) and Laura Barito of Stevens Institute of Technology (2011).

Sports update Oct. 8: Volleyball improves to 21-1 with five wins
The No. 1 volleyball team improved its record to 21-1 with five wins last week. The Bears earned a three-set win at Webster University Wednesday, before sweeping Knox College, Central College, Monmouth College (Ill.), and Westminster College (Mo.) on Friday and Saturday at the Bears Classic.
Students pack the DUC for first presidential debate
About 500 students attended the first 2012 presidential debate viewing party Oct. 3 in Tisch Commons, Danforth University Center. The event featured free food, games and prizes. Parties also are planned for the remaining debates at 8 p.m. Oct. 11, 16 and 22.
Global diversity winners to share experiences
The 2012 participants of the Global Diversity Overseas Seminar Program will share their experiences during two brown-bag lunch presentations next week. The winning staff members traveled to WUSTL study abroad locations in Paris, France, and Shanghai, China, this summer. The presentations will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 11, for Shanghai.
Speed mentoring event celebrates first woman law graduate
Law students and women lawyers, judges and faculty members gathered Sept. 20 to celebrate the anniversary of WUSTL’s first woman law graduate, Phoebe Couzins, who earned a degree in 1871. The special event featured “speed mentoring” and networking sessions with law students and women attorneys.

International economic forecaster and social observer Jeremy Rifkin will talk about preparing for the third industrial revolution at noon Thursday, Oct. 11, in Graham Chapel. A book signing will precede the lecture.
‘This American Life’ star and writer Sarah Vowell brings signature style to campus Oct. 8
Humorist and author of American culture, Sarah Vowell, will read from her work at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, in Graham Chapel. Vowell will read from her work, which often explores fundamental questions of American history, politics and cultural identity. A Q&A session and book signing will follow.
