The No. 4 WUSTL women’s soccer team will host 2012 NCAA Division III First and Second Round action Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 10-11, at Francis Field.

The football team limited Case Western Reserve University to 184 yards of total offense in a 10-7 victory Nov. 3 at Case Field in Cleveland, Ohio. With the win Washington University secured a share of its ninth University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in school history and its first since 2004.

Sophomore Anna Zambricki recorded the third hat trick of her career to lead the No. 5 women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory at Case Western Reserve University Oct. 28 in Cleveland, Ohio. With the win, WUSTL claimed the UAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament and at least a share of its eighth conference championship.

Steven S. Smith, PhD, director of the Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government and Public Policy and the​ Kate M. Gregg Distinguished Professor of Social Science and professor of political science, will be featured on 60 Minutes at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, on CBS talking about partisanship and procedural warfare in the Senate.

Undergraduate research opportunities at Washington University have come a long way in a few short years. When the first symposium to showcase undergraduates’ research was held in spring 2005, there were just 15 participants. This weekend, 210 undergraduates will showcase their research projects through poster presentations and visual and oral presentations during the Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.

For decades, author, educator, environmentalist and activist Bill McKibben has been telling us things we don’t want to hear — presenting scary scorched Earth scenarios due to carbon emissions in the atmosphere. He also leads a global initiative — 350.org — to try to solve the climate crisis. McKibben will give the keynote address for the Sustainable Cities Conference Thursday, Nov. 1, on campus. 

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton welcomed back two 2009 alums, Harrison Suarez (right) and Michael Haft — now both first lieutenants in the U.S. Marine Corps — who presented the university with a U.S. flag Oct. 20. The two men returned to personally thank Wrighton and the university for helping prepare them to serve their country.

Head football coach Larry Kindbom celebrated his 60th birthday in style as the Bears posted an 18-13 victory at Denison University Oct. 20 at Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio. WUSTL picked up its second win of the year and improves its overall record to 2-5.

Some 900 students have signed up to dance all night in the 14th annual St. Louis Area Dance Marathon. The 12-hour event begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Athletic Complex Field House, and lasts until 2 a.m. the next day. Faculty and staff are encouraged to take part, too, with Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton donating $14 for every employee who attends the reception. Proceeds benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Greater St. Louis.

Junior Yoni Barlev “rented” Max during Chi Omega sorority’s recent fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The sorority raised nearly $600 by renting dogs for 15-minute stints. More than 100 people rented the eight pets volunteered by faculty and staff. Make-A-Wish Foundation is the sorority’s nationally designated charity.
