Green Labs pilot program ends with significant energy savings
The pilot Danforth Campus Green Labs Initiative in Brauer Hall, held this past fall, resulted in a significant savings in carbon emissions and money, announced the Office of Sustainability. The program, modeled after a similar initiative at the School of Medicine, aims to spread energy awareness and conservation among the 850 labs on the Danforth Campus.
Spring Preview of WUSTL
A student tour guide begins a tour of the Danforth Campus for prospective students and their families in front of Brookings Hall. Tours will be a common sight on campus this April as WUSTL hosts Spring Preview for prospective students for the Class of 2016. During the monthlong celebration, high school seniors who have been admitted to WUSTL can experience tours of campus, sit in on classes and more.
Green Cup winners celebrate
Sophomore Lucas Tcheyan (left) of Sigma Chi Fraternity and freshman Avital Mandil of South 40 Lee/Beaumont Residential College accept the Green Cup award on behalf of their team members at the Green Cup Awards ceremony March 7 at Ursa’s Fireside on the South 40. The Green Cup recognized the South 40 residential college, North Side team and fraternity that reduced its energy use by the highest percentage during the four-week competition, which ended Feb. 29.
WUSTL named National Weather Service StormReady University
Washington University in St. Louis has been named the 104th national StormReady University by the National Weather Service. The designation recognizes communities — schools, cities and businesses — that take measures to ensure they are prepared for a
severe-weather emergency.
Guided Arbor Tour of Danforth Campus offered March 21
Kent Theiling Jr., grounds and landscape design manager for the Danforth Campus, will lead a Spring Arbor Tour Wednesday, March 21. The guided tour will start at 11 a.m. at the Beaumont Pavilion in Brookings Quadrangle and is expected to last approximately an hour. The tour will take participants on a walk throughout the Danforth Campus to learn more about the different kind of trees located on campus.
Emergency communications tests March 13, 14 and 21
WUSTL will test its emergency communication systems three times in March: at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 14; and at noon Wednesday, March 21. The tests will take place unless there is the potential for severe weather that day or some other emergency is occurring at that time. The drills are being held in conjunction with Missouri Severe Weather Awareness Week March 12-16.
WUSTL Dining Services to implement animal welfare policies
Bon Appetit, the food service company that manages WUSTL Dining Services, has announced its new farm animal welfare policy. The changes will affect meat, poultry and eggs served at WUSTL Dining Services locations. Under the new standards, Bon Appetit will employ the food service industry’s most comprehensive farm animal welfare policy to date, says Nadeem Siddiqui, director of WUSTL Dining Services.
WUSTL anthropologists’ work prompts Republic of Congo to enlarge national park
Research by WUSTL anthropologist Crickette Sanz, PhD, and colleague David Morgan, PhD, has spurred the Republic of Congo to enlarge its Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park boundaries to include the Goualougo Triangle. The Goualougo Triangle is a remote, pristine forest that is home to at least 14 communities of “naïve” chimpanzees with little exposure to humans.
Trzeciak named university librarian at Washington University in St. Louis

Jeffrey G. Trzeciak, university librarian at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, has been named university librarian at Washington University in St. Louis, effective July 1, 2012. Trzeciak replaces Shirley K. Baker, vice chancellor for scholarly resources and dean of University Libraries, who will retire after 23 years of service to WUSTL on June 30, 2012.
Free vehicle inspection for spring break travelers
The Washington University Police Department and Parking Services, in partnership with Hartmann’s Towing, will sponsor a free vehicle inspection service to students, faculty and staff Saturday, March 3. Persons anticipating traveling by car for spring break can bring their vehicle to the to the lower level of Millbrook Garage
between noon-2:30pm for a free inspection. The staff will check tire pressure, fluid levels, wipers and head- and taillights.
