Washington People: Carolyn Lesorogol
If you were a wandering shepherd and suddenly the government began parceling out land your flock grazed to your fellow citizens, would you be better off as a landowner instead? That’s the question that Carolyn Lesorogol, PhD, associate professor of social work, pondered when Kenya began to distribute property in the land registration movement of the 1970s.
WUSTL named Tree Campus USA for 2011
In March, Washington University again was designated a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of the university’s commitment to effective community forestry management. The university first was named a Tree Campus USA last year for 2010. Currently, the Danforth Campus is home to approximately 3,900 trees.
WUSTL Green Offices Program launches
Washington University’s new Green Offices Program has launched to encourage offices in all WUSTL campuses to become more sustainable. By launching the program, the Office of Sustainability and Resource Management aim to give offices concrete sustainability tips that can easily be incorporated into offices’ everyday routine and practice.
Commute without your car during Car-Free Month in April
Faculty, staff and students commuting to all WUSTL campuses are encouraged to leave their sedans, SUVs and minivans in the garage and go “car-free” for April 16-27 as part of the university’s Car-Free Challenge during Car-Free Month. The Car-Free Challenge offers teams of individuals a chance to try alternative means of transportation, track their progress in calories-burned and CO2-saved, and benchmark against other teams.

Olin Library hosts WUSTL tweetup
University Libraries and the Alumni Association are hosting a “WUSTL Tweets, Tweetup” at 3 p.m. Friday, April 27, in Olin Library’s Ginkgo Reading Room (Level 1). A tweetup is an in-person networking event for Twitter users to meet their friends/followers in real life.

‘Brazil Rising’ symposium at WUSTL April 4-6
A symposium focusing on culture, law and development in Brazil will be held April 4-6 at WUSTL. Events — which include a keynote lecture, film, and dance and percussion workshop — are free and open to the public, with the exception of the April 6 book discussion, which is open only to WUSTL faculty and graduate students.
Washington University Libraries introduce Open Scholarship repository
Washington University Libraries have announced the launch of Open Scholarship (openscholarship.wustl.edu), a new institutional online repository providing access to the scholarly output of faculty, students and staff from WUSTL. Developed following the Faculty Senate’s passage of an Open Access Resolution in May of 2011, Open Scholarship is a further step in the university’s commitment to make scholarship and creative works freely and easily available to the world community.
Washington University Libraries announce winners of 25th annual essay competition

Neureuther Student Book Collection Essay Competition sponsored by
Washington University Libraries. WUSTL undergrads and graduate students entered their essays into one
of two categories, competing for prizes of $1,000 for first place and
$500 for second place in each category.
