Portion of Throop Drive to close for construction of Knight, Bauer halls May 28

A section of Throop Drive that runs in front of Eliot Hall on the north side of the Danforth Campus will close beginning Monday, May 28, for the construction of Knight and Bauer halls for the Olin Business School. Throop will remain closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic until construction is completed in early March 2014.

New composting initiatives turn Danforth Campus food waste into fertilizer

WUSTL diners can toss a used napkin and food scraps into a campus compost bin, and 4-6 months later, their trash might be feeding the tulips in front of Brookings Hall. With the help of the WUSTL community, WUSTL Dining Services and the Office of Sustainability are working to turn more food scraps and trash into fertilizer through composting.

Sophia Hayes, associate professor of chemistry in Arts & Sciences, was an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley, leaning toward an economics major when she stumbled into a quantum mechanics class and then a chemistry class with a collaborative research focus. Research projects were the hook, and “I crammed the chemistry major into my last two years,” Hayes says.

Students display handmade books at Kranzberg Studio

The College of Arts and University Libraries hosted the 15th annual open house of the Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Studio for the Illustrated Book May 1 in Walker Hall. During the open house, students display their work from the academic year and compete for the Nancy Award, which recognizes outstanding student achievement in book design. 

Forsyth to close this summer during replacement of underpass to South 40

Forsyth Boulevard between Olympian Way and Wallace Drive will be closed to through traffic from May 22 through August as WUSTL partners with the city of Clayton to replace the Forsyth bridge. Construction will officially begin on the project in late May following Commencement. Forsyth is anticipated to reopen in August, which is planned to coincide with the reopening of the underpass to pedestrian traffic.

Family Learning Center celebrates Week of the Young Child

Children at Washington Unversity in St. Louis’ Family Learning Center parade around the grounds April 27 as the finale for the celebration of the Week of the Young Child. The parade focused on the cultures of the children at the center. The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration that focuses on the needs of young children and their families and recognizes the childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Work-study informational meeting for campus employers May 24

A meeting to help Danforth Campus employers learn the process and benefits of hiring Federal Work-Study Program students as employees next fall will be held at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, May 24, at Wilson Hall, Room 214. The meeting is being hosted by Student Financial Services and is geared toward WUSTL employers and/or departments. 

Staff Day set for May 21

Danforth Campus employees are invited to relax, have fun and celebrate with co-workers on Staff Day, Monday, May 21. Softball, volleyball, bike rides and bingo are just some of the many activities offered at Staff Day, a daylong celebration organized by the Office of Human Resources to recognize Danforth Campus staff members and show the university’s appreciation for their work throughout the year.

Women’s Society presents leadership award, scholarships

The Women’s Society of Washington University honored the legacy of two of the university’s most revered women at its annual meeting April 26. The society honored four exemplary college students with the Harriet K. Switzer Leadership Award and the Elizabeth Gray Danforth Scholarship at the Women’s Building Formal Lounge.
