University College to host sustainability symposium Oct. 26

University College, the continuing education and professional studies division in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, will host a symposium titled “The Sustainability Challenge: Local to Global” at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 in Steinberg Auditorium. The symposium will feature experts from Washington University and the greater St. Louis region as they discuss questions and challenges facing the environment, community development and organizational life.

WUSTL’s United Way campaign under way

WUSTL’s 2010 United Way campaign began Sept. 8, with the goal of raising $615,000 for the United Way of Greater St. Louis. The United Way supports organizations in the St. Louis region that offer an array of services, including counseling and substance abuse recovery, affordable child care and disaster relief. This year’s goal of raising $615,000 is the university’s most ambitious yet.

Steve Hoffner, associate vice chancellor for operations, seeks to create an environment that provides the campus community the support it needs to flourish and to truly feel at home at WUSTL.

James “Jamie” Kolker has been named assistant vice chancellor of campus planning and director of capital projects in Facilities Planning & Management at Washington University in St. Louis, announced Henry S. Webber, executive vice chancellor for administration.

Emergency notification system to be tested Wednesday, Sept. 15

Washington University will test its emergency notification system, WUSTLAlerts, at approximately 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15. For the test, WUSTLAlerts will send e-mails to @wustl.edu addresses, voice messages to campus phones and cell phones and text messages to cell phones.

New child-care facility opens on North Campus Sept. 7

WUSTL’s new child-care facility — the Washington University Family Learning Center — will open Tuesday, Sept. 7. The 19,900-square-foot center is located on North Campus and offers care for 156 children from the ages of 6 weeks to 6 years. The center serves the children of faculty, staff and students.

Reminder: WUSTL campuses are tobacco-free as of July 1

Washington University campuses became tobacco-free this past July, which means smoking and tobacco use now is prohibited on all university-owned and -managed properties. The university will continue to work with community members to support tobacco-cessation efforts.
