The annual health open enrollment period for the health/dental or dental-only plans, the health- and child-care flex spending plans, the Health Savings Account and the Retirement Medical Savings Account will be from Nov. 1-30. Enrollments and changes to these plans made during the open enrollment period and before the Nov. 30 deadline will be effective Jan. 1, 2011, for calendar year 2011.

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton addresses the crowd at the Women’s Society of Washington University’s 45th anniversary celebration and Scholarship Initiative kickoff for the Elizabeth Gray Danforth Scholarship Oct. 21 at Brauer Hall. The society’s Elizabeth Gray Danforth Scholarship provides two-year, full-tuition scholarships for students from St. Louis Community College who transfer to Washington University.

Washington University in St. Louis will offer a master of science in biology degree specifically for in-service teachers through University College, its adult, evening and continuing education division in Arts & Sciences. Faculty created and piloted the degree with 90 biology teachers nationwide as a National Science Foundation teacher institute.

Hourly rates for the WUSTL WeCar program will be reduced beginning Monday, Nov. 1, 2010. The WeCar program allows WUSTL students, faculty, staff and employees of qualified service providers to rent vehicles on campus at an hourly rate. The new rates, as of Nov. 1, are $5 per hour for a sedan and $8 per hour for an SUV.  

Since Josh Walehwa and his family left Uganda and the dictatorship of Idi Amin in 1976, Walehwa, associate director of residential life at Washington University, has been surrounded by teachers who have encouraged and inspired him to aim higher and think bigger. But no mentor has been as important as his mother.

The Office of Human Resources will offer two post-recession retirement investment seminars for WUSTL faculty and staff members Oct. 28 and 29: “New Rules for Investing” and “Which Way Is Up? — Mapping Your Retirement Strategy in a Post-Recession Economy.” Brett Hammond, PhD, managing director and chief investment strategist for TIAA-CREF, will lead each seminar.
