Washington University Libraries staff members are offering a series of free workshops to help introduce students, faculty and staff to Twitter. Each of the four sessions will be held in Olin Library’s Arc (Level A) at 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoons throughout the fall semester with topics ranging from Twitter 101, an introductory class, to more advanced workshops on specific uses of the popular social media platform.

The university is increasing composting opportunities on the Danforth Campus through pilot programs with schools and departments. Beginning in August, visitors to Brown Hall and Goldfarb Hall of the Brown School, Anheuser-Busch Hall of the School of Law, and Facilities’ office Millbrook Building will have an opportunity to compost some of their waste.

McLeod’s Way, a landscaped gathering place along the path from the Forsyth Underpass to the Clock Tower on the South 40, will be dedicated Saturday, Sept. 15, in memory of Jim McLeod, WUSTL’s beloved vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, who died in 2011 after a two-year battle with cancer. The gathering place, to be completed in early September, will feature wooden benches and granite and limestone walls inscribed with many of McLeod’s favorite, inspirational sayings.

Corporal Kimberly K. Chaitman of the Washington University Police Department died unexpectedly at her home in O’Fallon, Mo., Aug. 5, 2012. She was 32.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) has announced the six winners of the 2012 University Research Strategic Alliance (URSA) grants. The grants offer a one-year, $25,000 award to full-time faculty members at WUSTL who begin a new collaboration with investigators from different disciplines. Researchers who receive the seed funding will work together in a new area of research or plan to approach a problem in a different way.

Staff members from WUSTL’s University Archives have started a blog, Bears Repeating: History and Happenings from Washington University Archives. The blog will focus on a range of subjects from WUSTL and St. Louis history to updates on archives-related events and projects.

Two WUSTL professors — Peter J. Kastor, PhD, and Jessica Rosenfeld, PhD — have been named 2012 American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) fellows. Kastor, professor of history and American culture studies, both in Arts & Sciences, will pursue research on Creating a Federal Government, 1789-1829. Rosenfeld, associate professor of English in Arts & Sciences, will work on her book Envying thy Neighbor: Pleasure, Identity and Gender in Late Medieval Literature.

Organizations often are thought of as machines, cogs and wheels turning to crank out products or ideas. “But ultimately organizations are made up of people, and people interact in different ways,” says Stuart Bunderson, PhD, the George and Carol Bauer Professor of Organizational Ethics and Governance at Olin Business School.

Michael Runiewicz has been named director of Student Financial Services at Washington University in St. Louis. Previously, Runiewicz was associate director of Student Financial Services. Runiewicz replaces Bill Witbrodt, who retired after more than 20 years of service to Washington University June 30.
