A two-mile section of the Centennial Greenway, a planned 20-mile trail that crosses WUSTL’s Danforth Campus, is nearly complete. A dedication for the Melville/Delmar stretch of the greenway is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 29, at the newly created pedestrian plaza just east of Fitz’s American Grill & Bottling Works on Delmar Boulevard.

Workers remove sections of roof on Umrath Hall July 7 and 8. Umrath Hall closed June 20 for a complete renovation of the interior of the building. Once the yearlong renovation is finished, the building will feature a new roof and interior walls, floors and ceiling finishes, along with new HVAC, fire protection and electrical systems.

Washington University in St. Louis will welcome undergraduates from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, this July for the university’s inaugural five-week Fudan at Washington University Summer Program (July 17-Aug. 19). During the program, 28 Fudan students will enroll in two regularly scheduled courses in the College of Arts & Sciences’ Summer School, where they will study alongside their WUSTL counterparts.

For Robert E. Hegel, PhD, the Liselotte Dieckmann Professor of Comparative Literature in Arts & Sciences, Chinese language and literature offers ongoing opportunities to explore a fascination he has held since childhood — the universal love of storytelling.

Olin Library will host a “Sundaes (and Other Treats) in the Library” event Wednesday, July 13, and Thursday, Aug. 4, to help WUSTL faculty and staff members discover or rediscover the services and resources available to them at University Libraries.

Chancellor Emeritus William H. Danforth, MD, spoke about the contributions of Robert S. Brookings to Washington University, St. Louis and the United States during the June 23 dedication of the Brookings star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Brookings served as president of WUSTL’s Board of Trustees from 1895-1928. Brookings’ star is located on the corner of Delmar and Skinker boulevards, just outside WUSTL’s Corner Building.

The summer months can be quiet at Washington University, but construction crews are hard at work throughout the Danforth and Medical campuses renovating and building to create new and better places to work, study, teach and live.

WUSTL’s University College in Arts & Sciences will host a reception titled “Food For Thought” for prospective students of the Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) program at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at Jimmy’s on the Park in Clayton, Mo. The evening’s topic will be “Why Shakespeare Matters.” At the event, prospective students can meet faculty, staff and students from University College and learn about the MLA program.

The WUSTL Faculty Senate adopted an Open Access Resolution that encourages faculty members to make their scholarly and creative works freely available online. The resolution also includes a recommendation for University Libraries and the Bernard Becker Medical Library to develop the capacity to capture faculty scholarship, make it publicly accessible and preserve it over time.

WUSTL’s Summer School in Arts & Sciences will present a film series celebrating Frankenstein movies, “It’s Alive! A Celebration of Frankenstein Films,” this June and July. Each film will be introduced by a WUSTL scholar specializing in the genres of cinematic horror and literary monsters. All screenings are free and open to the public.
