A $500,000 gift from Wells Fargo to fund scholarships and internships for WUSTL undergraduate business school students has been announced by Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton.

James E. McLeod, vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, was presented with the Search Award at the university’s 43rd annual William Greenleaf Eliot gala May 11. McLeod was honored for 35 years of invaluable contributions, inspiration, devotion and guidance to the Washington University community.

As part of her visit to Washington University to attend the opening of her play, Metamorphoses, playwright Mary Zimmerman will give an Assembly Series talk on “Bodies I Have in Mind: Adapting Ancient Texts for the Stage,” at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, in Graham Chapel.

Social commentator, actress and comedian Nancy Giles will explore why “Mentoring Matters” for the Assembly Series at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 15 in Graham Chapel. The talk is free and open to the public.

The Jane and Whitney Harris Community Service Award was presented to Geraldine and Robert Virgil for their outstanding contributions to the St. Louis region.

Although best known as a pioneering feminist, Gloria Steinem always has been a civil rights advocate. Her work now extends to the burgeoning global problem of human trafficking. Steinem will be on campus at noon Monday, April 12, in Graham Chapel speaking on “Sex Trafficking and the New Abolitionists” for the Assembly Series.

Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir will give a free concert covering American history through music at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at the 560 Music Center.

James Lennox, PhD, a prominent scholar of the history and philosophy of biology, will deliver the annual John and Penelope Biggs Lecture in the Classics for the Assembly Series at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, in Simon Hall’s May Auditorium. This event, which is free and open to the public, originally was scheduled for April 8.

Hip hop artist and actor Common will give the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture, sponsored by the Association of Black Students, at 7 p.m. Monday, March 29, in Graham Chapel. This event was originally scheduled to take place April 6.

It is being called “A Celebration of Women and Diversity at Washington University,” but it is much more than a celebration. Beginning Monday, April 5 through Saturday, April 10, a unique set of events — mostly free and open to the public — will be offered that demonstrate the talent and vitality that women and minorities bring to the university, the region, the nation and the world.
