The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has given Washington University in St. Louis its 2011 award for best overall performance in fundraising. CASE is one of the world’s largest and most respected nonprofit associations for professionals working in advancement and communications fields for educational institutions.

Robert S. Brookings played a pivotal role in the development of what is now WUSTL’s Danforth Campus. He also founded the Brookings Institution, which now enjoys an academic partnership with WUSTL. He will be honored June 22 and 23 with a lecture and a star on St. Louis’ Walk of Fame.

This year’s Eliot Society Search Award was given to Sima and Philip Needleman for their extraordinary dedication to Washington University. The award was given May 11 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Clayton, Mo. “This year’s Search awardees, Philip and Sima Needleman, have an enduring association with Washington University, and have served the institution in many important ways,” Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton says. “It was a pleasure to acknowledge their significant and lasting contributions.”

Mark S. Weil, PhD, the E. Desmond Lee Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art History & Archaeology in Arts & Sciences and one of Washington University’s most prominent and long-serving professors, is providing the institution with a gift of $2,525,000 to support Arts & Sciences and programs in the humanities. From this gift, an endowed fund of $250,000 will be established to support the University Libraries.

The role of food, and of meals shared and meals denied in the struggle for American citizenship, will be the topic of Rafia Zafar’s Phi Beta Kappa Lecture at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in Lab Sciences, Room 300. This Assembly Series event, the final one for this academic year, is free and open to the public.

Ireland native Maria Bernadette Majella Doyle, MD, assistant professor of surgery at the School of Medicine and a member of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital organ transplantation team, will present the annual Women’s Society Adele Starbird Lecture at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, in Graham Chapel. Doyle’s talk, part of the Assembly Series, will provide insight into the life of a transplantation surgeon. It is free and open to the public.

Andrew Stewart, PhD, the Nicholas C. Petris Professor of Greek Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, will deliver this year’s John and Penelope Biggs Lecture in Classics as part of the Assembly Series. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in Steinberg Hall Auditorium on Washington University’s Danforth campus.

Jack C. Taylor, philanthropist and founder of Enterprise Holdings, has given Washington University in St. Louis $25 million for undergraduate scholarships on behalf of the company, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton announced. The gift will be added to the existing endowed scholarship fund that was established in 2001 by Enterprise Holdings, the parent company of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car.

It was just like the late Jane Freund Harris to leave a perpetual valentine to the community she loved. In her bequest 12 years ago, she created the Jane and Whitney Harris St. Louis Community Service Award for couples who work tirelessly to enhance the St. Louis region. This year’s recipients are Maxine Clark and Bob Fox.
