Hendrix is an Eisner-nominated, New York Times bestselling illustrator and author. His books include “The Faithful Spy: Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Plot to Kill Hitler”, named the Best Book of 2018 by NPR, “Drawing Is Magic: Discovering Yourself in a Sketchbook”; “The Holy Ghost: A Spirited Comic, Miracle Man: The Story of Jesus”; and many others. His award-winning illustrations have also appeared on book jackets, newspapers and magazines all over the world.
Alongside D.B. Dowd, Hendrix leads the Sam Fox MFA Illustration & Visual Culture program, which explores the idea of illustration authorship by combining studio practice in illustration/comics with academic and archival-based training in visual and material culture. Hendrix and his students work extensively with the Dowd Illustration Research Archive (DIRA), a vast repository of original illustrations, magazines, comics and visual ephemera from the 19th and 20th centuries.
