Alumni and friends gathered for the Founders Day dinner on Nov. 5, 2011, at the St. Louis Union Station Marriott. This annual event commemorates the founding of Washington University in 1853. The guest speaker for the evening was Doris Kearns Goodwin, a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian. The Alumni Association honored distinguished alumni, faculty and friends for their achievements:

Call for Founders Day 2012 Nominations
The deadline for the 2012 Founders Day Awards nominations is Jan. 13, 2012.
Nominations received after this date will be eligible for consideration for the 2013 Founders Day Awards.
Founders Day Awards Criteria
Distinguished Alumni Awards recognize outstanding professional achievement, public service, exceptional service to Washington University or all three. The criteria for the award include the following:
• Professional achievement — National success and achievement in field of expertise (Judgment of others in the field will be given special attention.)
• Public service — Significant contributions in areas of public service
• Service — Active engagement in university or alumni affairs for a minimum of five, but preferably 10 years
Members of the Executive Committee of the Alumni Board of Governors, members of the Washington University Board of Trustees, current employees and former employees within five years of departure from the university are not eligible for this award.
Distinguished Faculty Awards recognize outstanding commitment to the intellectual and personal development of students. The criteria for the award include the following:
• Quality of instruction
• Relationship to students
• Availability to students outside the classroom
• Reputation for scholarship
• Distinguished service to Washington University
The nominee must be a full-time tenured faculty member with a minimum of seven years of teaching experience at Washington University and actively teaching when nominated (unless on the “Clinical Track” in the School of Medicine, in which case the tenure criterion is not applicable). Faculty on sabbatical are considered active members, but visiting faculty members are not eligible. Retired faculty members must be nominated within one year of retirement.

A complete Founders Day nomination consists of the following:
• A nomination letter that outlines the nominee’s professional accomplishments, civic involvement, and his/her volunteer and/or philanthropic contributions to Washington University.
• Supporting materials, including at least two of the following: biography, résumé/vitae, magazine articles, news clippings or journal articles.
