Who Knew WashU? 10.25.16

Question: In the spirit of Halloween, where on the Danforth Campus does this gargoyle (or more accurately, boss) appear? gargoyle-danforth-campus

Answer: B) All around campus, you’ll find traditional medieval bosses and grotesques, such as beaked heads, horrific creatures and mermaids, along with a “visible record” of college life, such as sculptures of owls studying Latin texts and professors lecturing. This one can be found in Graham Chapel.

The university’s first grotesques and bosses were the creations of Philadelphia architects Walter Cope and John Stewardson.

Learn more about them in Washington magazine.

Congrats to this week’s winner,  Sarah O’Donnell, who works in the Religious Studies program in Arts & Sciences and will receive an “I Knew WashU!” luggage tag!
