Jeffrey McCune, associate professor of performing arts and of women, gender and sexuality studies, both in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, won the Michael Lynch Service Award from the Gay, Lesbian, Queer Caucus of the Modern Language Association.

McCune received the award and led a special session during the MLA’s 2016 convention, which took place Jan. 7-10 in Austin, Texas.

Citing McCune’s book “Sexual Discretion: Black Masculinity and the Politics of Passing,” and other writings, as well as his participation in the #BlackLivesMatter movement, GL/Q Caucus chair Shanté Paradigm Smalls praised McCune as “a model scholar-activist whose work at the intersection of race and sexuality has positively impacted not only his home campus but also LGBTQ communities across the nation.”
