Four School of Medicine nurses have received the 2017 Excellence in Nursing Award from St. Louis Magazine, and six others were finalists in the program. The awards honor local nurses who have made a difference in the lives of their patients and colleagues.

Washington University in St. Louis has admitted 50 rising high school sophomores to its innovative College Prep Program, a multiyear initiative that prepares high-achieving students with limited financial resources for college. The students represent public, private and charter schools from across the region. They will live and learn on the campus of Washington University for the next three summers.

A small clinical trial conducted in part at the School of Medicine suggests that some patients with severe asthma may benefit from a drug commonly prescribed to treat chronic myeloid leukemia.

Washington University’s 156th Commencement is at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 19, in Brookings Quadrangle. The university will award 3,251 degrees to 3,095 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. The university also will bestow honorary degrees on six individuals.

Due to the threat of severe weather Friday, May 19, the university is reminding graduating students, families and campus volunteers about the severe weather plan. The dream of flight has powered some of the world’s most ambitious feats of design and engineering. Last week, first-year architecture students put their own aeronautical experiments to the test, launching from the top of Art Hill in Forest Park.

The Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship Program is welcoming 12 new fellows, who will begin their graduate studies this fall. The students will be continuing their education in Arts & Sciences, the Brown School and the Sam Fox School.

Researchers at the School of Medicine in St. Louis and California Institute of Technology have developed a technology to scan a breast tumor sample and produce images detailed enough to check whether a tumor has been completely removed.

Joshua Jackson has been installed as the Saul and Louise Rosenzweig Associate Professor of Personality Science at Washington University in St. Louis. A ceremony and reception were held March 21 in Holmes Lounge in Ridgley Hall to celebrate the occasion.

Bradley Schlaggar, MD, PhD, a pediatric neurologist, studies brain development at the School of Medicine. And he has a lot of empathy for patients and their families. A series of medical challenges his own family has endured in recent years deepened his understanding of what it means to be a doctor.
