The Center for Diabetes Translation Research, led by Debra Haire-Joshu, the Joyce Wood Professor at the Brown School, has been awarded $3.7 million to continue five years of funding by the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a National Institutes of Health institute.

Washington University will host Midwest Research University Network’s Gateways to Innovation conference at the Cortex Innovation Community on Sept. 15. The event will focus on technology transfer and startup financing. The deadline to register is Sept. 8.

Washington University will host a four-day symposium Sept. 26-29 called “Communicating Science 2016.” The event, to be held at the Eric P. Newman Education Center on the Medical Campus, is geared toward helping scientists share news of their work effectively with people outside of their specific disciplines.

The School of Law is celebrating its 150th anniversary at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, with a toast, cake and a Clydesdale outside Anheuser-Busch Hall.

Nancy Morrow-Howell, the Bettie Bofinger Brown Distinguished Professor of Social Policy and director of the Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging, will receive the Crown Leadership Award Nov. 6 from the Gladys and Henry Crown Center for Senior Living in University City.

Washington University in St. Louis senior Kenneth Sng is president of Student Union, a gifted student in mathematics and economics in Arts & Sciences and a residential advisor. But he also knows failure. He failed his driver’s test six times before passing on the seventh try. “My father always says, ‘Pick yourself up where you fall.’ That’s what I did.”

Edward Greenberg, professor emeritus of economics who taught and conducted research at Washington University in St. Louis for more than five decades, died Aug. 24, 2016, at his home in University City. He was 80.
