Washington University in St. Louis Arts & Sciences seniors Heidi Chiu and Cameron Kinker have been selected for 2016 Humanity in Action summer fellowship programs in Europe and the United States.
Chiu is an international and area studies major who has worked as an intern with the Ferguson Commission; the White House Council on Strong Cities, Strong Communities; and the National Economic and Social Rights Initiative in New York City.
Kinker is a dual major studying anthropology (global health and environment track) and women, gender and sexuality studies. Kinker wrote his honors thesis on transgender health care in the St. Louis region and is a Civic Scholar through the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement. He has been active in various student groups including Students in Solidarity and the LGBTQIA facilitation group SafeZones. He also served as a resident advisor.
Chiu and Kinker are among 48 college students and recent graduates selected for the fellowship program, which encourages future leaders to be engaged citizens and responsible decision-makers.
They will join fellows from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland and Ukraine in exploring past and present examples of resistance to intolerance.
