Drug may slow spread of deadly eye cancer

A drug commonly used to treat seizures appears to make eye tumors less likely to grow if they spread to other parts of the body, according to new research at the School of Medicine. The findings are available online in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.

Student, graduate among Rhodes Scholar finalists

Arts & Sciences senior Ashley D. Brosius and Fidel Desir, a 2010 graduate in Arts & Sciences, were among 210 finalists from across the United States for the Rhodes scholarship for graduate study at the University of Oxford in England.

University College to host Preview Night Dec. 8

University College — the professional and continuing education division in Arts & Sciences — will host Preview Night at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in Holmes Lounge, Ridgley Hall. The program will have speakers discussing class and program offerings, admissions requirements and financial aid. A special breakout room will be available for WUSTL employees.

UN Academic Impact tabs WUSTL as a member

Washington University has joined 600-plus universities in more than 100 countries as a member of the United Nations Academic Impact. WUSTL’s participation is being organized through the McDonnell International Scholars Academy.

Scholars in Business program aids Olin students 

More than 45 percent of undergraduate business students, and a larger fraction of MBA students, need financial assistance to attend Olin Business School. Thanks to the Scholars in Business program, they can. Established in 1979, this named scholarship program is supported by hundreds of individuals and companies that provide more than 350 partial- and full-tuition named scholarships to Olin students.

Recycle holiday lights here

Discovering all those burned out lights in your holiday decorating? They can be recycled at one of 14 drop-off points among all four WUSTL campuses. The Office of Sustainability is partnering with StLouisGreen.com and Operation Food Search on the initiative, which runs Nov. 21-Jan. 17 at the School of Medicine and Nov. 16-Jan. 31 at the other three WUSTL campuses.

Swimming and diving teams ranked in top 15

The College Swim Coaches Association of America Division III coaches have conducted the season’s first poll, and both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are ranked in the top 15. The men are ranked 13th, while the women are ranked 15th. Both teams put their rank on the line Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3, at the Wheaton Invitational in Wheaton, Ill.
