Hearing loss is common for soldiers coming home from deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, but another perhaps equally vexing problem is tinnitus, a condition that causes them to hear sound that isn’t there. Using MRI scans, School of Medicine researchers hope to identify differences in brain activity that will aid development of preventive strategies to alleviate the effects of tinnitus. FULL STORY

Christine Schutt, the Visiting Fannie Hurst Professor of Creative Literature in the Department of English in Arts & Sciences and a nominee for both the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, will present two events March 31 and April 7 as part of the Writing Program Reading Series. • Swimming and diving teams compete at NCAA championship meet. The men’s swimming and diving team captured 16th place and the women finished 24th at the 2011 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships March 23-26 in Knoxville, Tenn. The Bears broke several school records at the four-day national meet.
