The geography of Antarctica’s underside

Planetary scientists in Arts & Sciences have deployed seismometers rugged enough to withstand the intense cold in Antarctica. The recordings across the West Antarctic Rift Valley and Marie Byrd Land provide the first detailed look at the mantle beneath the ice and rocks, revealing areas of hot rock that might affect the behavior of the overlying ice sheet.

Goldberg named Kipnis Distinguished Professor

Daniel E. Goldberg, MD, PhD, a renowned researcher in molecular parasitology at the School of Medicine, has been named the inaugural David M. and Paula L. Kipnis Distinguished Professor. Goldberg, an alum who earned his medical degree and a doctorate in molecular biology here, is a longtime professor of medicine and of molecular microbiology.

Bear Cub Challenge awardees announced

The Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship has awarded Bear Cub grants to two Washington University researchers: David T. Curiel, MD, PhD, and Nancy Tye-Murray, PhD. The next cycle of the Bear Cub Challenge will occur in late February and early March. Educational and training sessions are underway.
