Obituary: Douglass C. North, Nobel Prize-winning economist, 95

Douglass C. North, PhD, co-recipient of the 1993 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and the Spencer T. Olin Professor Emeritus in Arts & Sciences, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at his summer home in Benzonia, Mich. A beloved and iconic figure at the university, North was 95.

$6.5 million to fund research, treatment of developmental disabilities

Researchers at the School of Medicine received a five-year, $6.5 million grant to study the physiological underpinnings of developmental disabilities in children and to search for novel ways to improve their lives. The grant renews funding for the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center, directed by John N. Constantino, MD (left), and Bradley L. Schlaggar, MD, PhD.

Women’s soccer advances to Final Four

The No. 4-ranked women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Division III Semifinal with a 1-0 win over University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Nov. 22 at Francis Field. The Bears take on top-ranked Messiah College at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, in Kansas City. This marks the team’s first Final Four since 2009 and third in school history.

Boeing challenge finalists to present ideas Dec. 3

Student teams have been working this fall on projects to commercialize Boeing patents in non-aerospace applications, in a partnership between the Skandalaris Center and Boeing’s entrepreneurial arm. Six teams of finalists will present their ideas Thursday, Dec. 3.
