Buried in the cornerstone of the Gary M. Sumers Recreation Center, a time capsule placed Nov. 7 contains a​ 2015 course catalog; a piece of the Francis Gym floor; an original Red Alert shirt; and a letter from Athletic Director Emeritus John Schael to the athletic director of 2065.

What is gentrification, and can urban renewal be accomplished responsibly and ethically? Executive Vice Chancellor ​Henry S. Webber and Molly Metzger, PhD, of the Brown School, will explore these issues for St. Louis Up Close. Sponsored by the Gephardt Institute, the event on gentrification is at 4 p.m. today in the Danforth University Center.

Public health threats focus of annual conference

Readiness for and recovery from public health threats will be highlighted Thursday, Nov. 19, at the eighth annual conference of the Institute for Public Health. Infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters and civil unrest are among the topics that will be addressed.

PAD presents ‘The Misanthrope’ starting Friday

How much honesty is too much? In “The Misanthrope,” presented Nov. 13-22 by the Performing Arts Department in Arts & Sciences, the great French playwright Molière examines the line between diplomacy and deception, between truth-telling and cruelty. Senior Charley Cotton (right) leads the cast.

WashU Expert: Timing crucial to immigration appeal to Supreme Court

The Obama administration will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review a ruling blocking the president’s executive actions on immigration. Timing is crucial, said immigration law expert Stephen H. Legomsky, JD, DPhil, noting it’s unclear whether there’s enough time for the high court to rule before Obama leaves office.

Faculty, staff invited to join Dance Marathon event

Faculty and staff are encouraged to join with students at this year’s Dance Marathon at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Danforth University Center. The annual event raises money for Cardinal Glennon and St. Louis Children’s hospitals.
