Flipping the switch to better see cancer cells

A team of engineers, led by Lihong Wang, PhD, and postdoctoral researcher Junjie Yao, found a way to clearly see tiny amounts of live cancer cells as deep as 1 centimeter in tissue using photoacoustic tomography. They did so by genetically modifying glioblastoma cancer cells to express BphP1 protein, derived from a bacterium commonly found in soil and water.

Transgender Day of Remembrance events planned

Two events will be held on campus beginning Thursday, Nov. 12, to mark Trans* Awareness Week. Organized by student groups dedicated to creating an inclusive environment for the LGBTQIA community, the events will shine a light on the societal obstacles and legal barriers that generate and perpetuate hate-based violence and systemic oppression. National Transgender Day of Remembrance is Nov. 20.

Freshwater fish, amphibians supercharge their ability to see infrared light ​​

Salmon and other freshwater fish and amphibians supercharge their ability to see red and infrared light. Scientists at the School of Medicine have shown that this evolutionary adaptation hinges on the activity of an enzyme that converts vitamin A1 to vitamin A2, enabling the aquatic creatures to more easily navigate murky waters.

‘The Paintings of Sir Winston Churchill’ opens Friday at Kemper

Winston Churchill was a dedicated painter. At home, on holiday and even on the battlefield, his oils were rarely far from hand. The National Churchill Museum and the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum present “The Paintings of Sir Winston Churchill,” opening Friday, Nov. 13. It’s one of the most significant exhibitions of Churchill’s work ever in North America.

WashU Expert: Rishe on Russia’s doping scandal

It’s another far-reaching global sporting scandal as the World Anti-Doping Agency recommends the International Association of Athletics Federations suspend Russia from athletics competition. Olin Business of Sports Program Director Patrick Rishe said the decision could have fallout of Olympic proportion.
