Political scientist Andrew Reeves, PhD, of Arts & Sciences, has written a book about when and why presidents play favorites. In “The Particularistic President: Executive Branch Politics and Political Inequality,” he writes about how Americans hold the president accountable for even local-level issues such as paying for roads, and how presidents find political opportunity in spending decisions.

As part of Washington University’s ongoing efforts to understand the public health implications of gun violence, Sandy and Lonnie Phillips (seated) visited campus to meet with students, faculty, administrators and community leaders. The Phillipses shared the personal tragedy of losing their daughter, Jessica, in the 2012 mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater.

Jonathan M. Green, MD, associate dean for human studies and executive chair of the university’s Institutional Review Board, has been appointed to the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections within the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. He will serve a three-year term.

Washington University and its athletics support organization, the W Club, announced the 2016 class of its Sports Hall of Fame. The group features seven former student-athletes, two teams and two distinguished service honorees. Induction ceremonies will be held Feb. 12, 2016.
