Arts & Sciences launches medical humanities minor

This fall, the College of Arts & Sciences has launched a new minor in medical humanities. Program founders Rebecca Messbarger, PhD (left), and Corinna Treitel, PhD, discuss the minor, the meaning of the medical humanities and the relationship between the arts and sciences.

Schizophrenia symptoms linked to features of brain’s anatomy​​

Using advanced brain imaging, researchers have matched certain behavioral symptoms of schizophrenia to features of the brain’s anatomy. The findings, from a research team led by the School of Medicine’s C. Robert Cloninger, MD, PhD (right), and Igor Zwir, PhD, could be a step toward improving diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia.

Inspiring future STEM leaders through Legos

Washington University engineering students volunteered to help with a recent First Lego League event in University City. The opportunity, arranged through the Institute for School Partnership, helps connect university students studying in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields with middle schoolers to inspire and challenge them.

Greek students give back in service projects

Junior Katy Przybylski, of the university’s Women’s Panhellenic Association, writes about Greek Day of Service. In September, about 250 students spent a Saturday completing service projects at 15 sites around St. Louis, from gardening to introducing KIPP charter-school students to campus.

Wright to deliver 2015 Homer G. Phillips health lecture

John A. Wright, PhD, author and historian, will speak at the 20th annual Homer G. Phillips Public Health Lecture Series at the School of Medicine on Friday, Oct. 23. The title of his talk is “Homer G. Phillips and the Ville: Celebrating the Legacy.” To attend, register by Monday, Oct. 19.
