A bipartisan group of U.S. senators announced legislation last week that would overhaul the country’s criminal justice system, giving judges more leeway in sentencing and reducing sentences for some nonviolent offenders. Carrie Pettus-Davis, PhD, an expert on criminal justice system reform at the Brown School, says the bill doesn’t go far enough.

Lisa Cristine Simone, 25, a doctoral candidate in the Program in Physical Therapy at the School of Medicine, died unexpectedly Sept. 29, 2015, in St. Louis. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Valley Park.
