Certain personality traits can lead to more stressful life events, and new research from Arts & Sciences shows those events in turn relate to health problems in older adults. The study, led by Juliette Iacovino, a graduate student studying clinical psychology, is published online in the Journal of Personality.

With “Boîte-en-valise,” Marcel Duchamp created an artistic retrospective the size of a salesman’s sample case. Now the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum has acquired for its permanent collection an early example of this important work by one of the 20th century’s most influential artists.

A second round of funding in the Ferguson Academic Seed Fund program is now available, the Offices of the Chancellor and the Provost announced. The funding provides for innovative projects that explore the issues underlying unrest in our region. A grant-writing workshop will be held at 3 p.m. today in the Danforth University Center, followed by a faculty information session Friday, Oct. 2. Applications are due by Oct. 15.

Matthew Mutch, MD, a nationally known clinician and educator in the laparoscopic treatment of colorectal cancer, has been named chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine. Mutch is program director of the university’s Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship.

October is Active Transportation Month at the university. Activities kick off today with free bike tuneups outside the DUC, with other events scheduled in the coming weeks. The Active Transportation Challenge, which encourages people to use public transit, carpool or bike to work, begins Monday, Oct. 5.
