A message from the chancellor and provost: an update on our diversity, inclusion efforts

The university’s Steering Committee for Diversity & Inclusion, led by Nancy Staudt, JD, PhD, dean of the School of Law, has wrapped up its work and issued a report and recommendations. As a result, a Commission on Diversity & Inclusion is being established, and the chair will be Vice Provost Adrienne Davis, JD. The university community is invited to an Oct. 9 forum to discuss the report.

Hillman Hall a ‘healthy’ building

Exercise. Eat right. Most of us know how to keep our bodies healthy. But what about a building? Amy Eyler, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School, will use the school’s newly opened Hillman Hall as a laboratory. She is conducting a yearlong study aimed at quantifying the impact of the building’s many innovative features on the well-being of those who work there.

Hunstad named director of pediatric infectious diseases division

David A. Hunstad, MD, associate professor of pediatrics, has been named director of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the School of Medicine. A School of Medicine graduate, Hunstad previously served as director of the pediatric infectious diseases fellowship program and co-founded the Pediatric Physician-Scientist Training Program.

WashU Expert: Federal Reserve buys time on possible rate hike​

While the economy has rebounded, the recent market upheaval in China, and the resulting ripple effects felt globally, raised concerns. Jennifer Dlugosz, PhD, of Olin Business School, says the Fed’s decision yesterday to hold rates steady buys more time to gauge global markets’ strength, and possible volatility, should a rate hike occur in the near future.

‘Want a vibrant public square? Support religious tax exemptions’

We should protect religious organizations — even those we disagree with, argues John Inazu, JD, PhD, of the School of Law, in an essay in The Washington Post. The federal tax exemption for religious organizations welcomes and encourages a diverse set of viewpoints, he says.

Join kickball tournament, raise funds for service trip

Occupational therapy students are planning their service-learning trip to Guatemala next spring, and they are holding a kickball tournament as a fundraiser from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. Players can sign up individually or as teams. The cost is $10 per person.
