Time capsule will send a message to the future

The university community is invited to contribute to a time capsule for the cornerstone of the Gary M. Sumers Recreation Center. The capsule, set to be opened in 2065, hopefully will fare better than its predecessor. The contents in the recently recovered 1902 time capsule from Francis Gymnasium were largely destroyed by water.

Sociology launches inaugural semester with focus on income inequality

Social problems linked to America’s growing disparities in income and wealth will be a major focus of the relaunched Department of Sociology in Arts & Sciences. Issues of income inequality are a primary focus of the department’s leadership, including chair Steven Fazzari, PhD, and associate chair Mark Rank, PhD.

On Twitter, hookah smoking seen as positive​​​

Positive mentions on Twitter about hookah smoking may promote the assumption that it is less harmful than smoking cigarettes even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that hookah smoking has many of the same harmful toxins and carries the same health risks, according to new research at the School of Medicine. Melissa J. Krauss, right, with a hookah pipe, led the research.

Rankine speaks on racism for Assembly Series

Claudia Rankine, author of “Citizen: An American Lyric,” will speak on campus next week as part of the Assembly Series. Rankine’s book, a collection of poetry that delves into “micro-racist” moments, is this year’s First Year Reading Program selection. Her lecture is at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, in Graham Chapel.
