New strategy to lower blood sugar may help in diabetes treatment​

Working in mice, researchers at the School of Medicine, led by Brian N. Finck, PhD (left), and Kyle S. McCommis, PhD, showed they could reduce glucose production in the liver and lower blood-sugar levels. Their approach — shutting down a liver protein involved in making glucose — may help treat type 2 diabetes.

Composer Shannon Wood premieres new work

Shannon Wood, principal timpani for the St. Louis Symphony, will debut a new work Sunday, Sept. 13, in the 560 Music Center. The piece seeks to capture the rhythms and flavors of life in Sicily. The premiere is part of “Symphony in Your College,” a free concert presented by the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences and the St. Louis Symphony.

Emergency communication system to be tested next week

Washington University will test its emergency communication system, WUSTLAlerts, at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16. The test will take place unless there is the potential for severe weather that day or some other emergency is occurring at that time.

Medicine’s Eades talks about charity ride to fight cancer

Bill Eades, of the School of Medicine, talks in a video about why Pedal the Cause, which raises funds for cancer research, is so important to him. The St. Louis event, set for Sept. 26-27, will benefit Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Kemper holds opening reception tomorrow

The Kemper Art Museum will host an opening reception at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, for three exhibitions: “World War I: War of Images, Images of War,” “Rotation 2: Contemporary Art from the Peter Norton Gift” and “Relationships and Representation: Perspectives on Social Justice Work.” This fall, the museum will present nearly two-dozen free public events.

Adaptive triathlon for kids to be held this weekend

The Tri My Best Triathlon is an event for school-age children with motor disorders. The kids will swim, bike and run, with adaptations as needed, from 8 a.m. until noon Sunday, Sept. 13, on the Danforth Campus. Organizers hope students and others can help cheer on the young athletes.
