A new study shows that quitting smoking after a heart attack has immediate benefits, including less chest pain, better quality of daily life and improved mental health. Many of these improvements became apparent as little as one month after quitting and are more pronounced after one year, according to the research led by Sharon Cresci, MD, at the School of Medicine.

Provost Holden Thorp, PhD, has appointed an eight-member committee to identify candidates for the position of dean of the Brown School. Edward F. Lawlor, PhD, the William E. Gordon Distinguished Professor, announced he will step down as dean at the end of the academic year, June 30.

Four new faculty members have joined the School of Engineering & Applied Science for the 2015-16 academic year. They are Aaron Bobick, PhD; Hong Chen, PhD; Rohan Mishra, PhD; and Lori A. Setton, PhD. That brings total faculty to 87 as the school strives to reach 100 faculty members by 2020.

Robert Henke, PhD, of Arts & Sciences, has published a new book, “Poverty & Charity in Early Modern Theater and Performance.” The transnational work helps demonstrate how early modern theater revealed the gap between official policy and actual treatment of the poor.
