Gastric bypass surgery lowers women’s alcohol tolerance​

Women who have gastric bypass surgery to lose weight should keep a close eye on their alcohol consumption, according to a School of Medicine study. The researchers found that changes in how alcohol is metabolized after surgery can speed its delivery into the bloodstream, resulting in earlier and higher peaks in blood-alcohol levels.

High-energy observatory launches

A cargo container launched Wednesday from the southern coast of Japan should reach the International Space Station on Monday. The container is carrying CALET, an astrophysical observatory designed to study the high-energy cosmos, including the rare ultra-heavy nuclei, of long interest to the university’s astrophysicists.

Lower-cost solar cells may spring from model

Cynthia Lo, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, has developed a new model to evaluate solar panel performance. The aMoBT model provides materials design guidelines that could speed development of lower-cost solar cells. The results of the work recently were published in Physical Review B.

New Medical Campus staff garage opens in phases ​

St. Louis College of Pharmacy students began using the new staff garage on Duncan Avenue this week, and Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College students are scheduled to begin using it Wednesday, Aug. 26. As construction around the garage area finishes, staff will be able to park there.

Diversity Collaborative seeks new members

The Campus Diversity Collaborative aims to increase awareness of diversity and inclusion issues at Washington University. The group, founded in 2007, seeks new members among faculty and staff on both the Danforth and Medical campuses. Those interested should apply by Aug. 31.
