When STEM education meets African-American culture

Studies show that despite demonstrating high interest, African-American girls have fewer support systems, less exposure to, and lower academic achievement in STEM fields than their Caucasian counterparts. Sheretta Butler-Barnes, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School, is working to change that.

WashU seismologist on ‘San Andreas’: Geology is all wrong, but movie is a kick

Earthquake seismologist Aubreya Adams, PhD, is teaching a course on natural disasters in movies and reviewed the newly released film “San Andreas.” The short version: they clearly didn’t have a seismologist consulting on this film. The take-home message: Go see it anyway. It’s summer.

St. Louis Children’s Specialty Care Center opens in west St. Louis County

The School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital have opened a new pediatric medical center — the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Specialty Care Center — at Interstate 64/Highway 40 and Mason Road in west St. Louis County. The center welcomed its first patients June 2.

New chief of spine surgery named

Munish C. Gupta, MD, has been appointed professor and chief of spine surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the School of Medicine. He comes from the University of California, Davis and will assume his new duties Sept. 1.

Duncan Avenue reopening delayed

Construction to upgrade a storm-sewer line on Duncan Avenue west of Newstead Avenue has been delayed. The project led to closure of the north entrance to the St. Louis Children’s Hospital staff garage. A completion date has not been determined.

Brown School offers encore career course

The Brown School is offering a course to help people chart their encore career path. The deadline for the four-session August evening program is July 28.
