Americans are generally a pretty happy bunch, according to a new study that aims to further our collective understanding of happiness and its root causes. Lamar Pierce, PhD, associate professor of organization and strategy in Olin Business School, helped lead the research.

The Opportunity rover is exploring a Martian crater named the Spirit of St. Louis, after the famous aircraft — which was in turn named in honor of St. Louis residents who purchased it for Charles Lindbergh. The mission team picked this naming scheme because Washington University team members spotted a promising target just beyond the crater.

David Shearrer, a leader in fundraising initiatives at the School of Medicine, has been named the university’s associate vice chancellor and director of medical alumni and development programs.

Cynthia Cosby, a champion for the university’s African-American students and alumni, was the 18th recipient of the Gloria W. White Distinguished Service Award. Mahendra Gupta, PhD, dean of Olin Business School (left), congratulated Cosby after Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton presented her with the award at the Staff Day celebration May 18.

One of the newest additions to the Medical Campus, Shriners Hospitals for Children-St. Louis officially will open Monday, June 1. The new facility is expected to enhance clinical care and research collaborations with the School of Medicine, with which Shriners has had a longstanding partnership since the 1920s.

The Duncan Avenue entrance to the St. Louis Children’s Hospital staff parking garage will reopen Monday, June 1, a few days later than planned due to weather and other delays. Also Monday, the Newstead Avenue entrance to the garage will close for up to two months.
Some of the Danforth Campus, School of Medicine and BJC HealthCare mail operations will share space beginning June 15 to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
