The devastating earthquake in Nepal has forced three university researchers to alter their plans for research-related projects in the country — one who was working in Kathmandu when the quake hit and two who planned to fly there days later. They suggest one way to help is by supporting strong nongovernmental organizations with disaster-response experience and staff in Nepal.

Two graduating WashU athletes have a shot at continuing their athletic careers. Lillie Toaspern (left), a two-time All-American women’s soccer midfielder, has signed with the reserve squad of the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women’s Soccer League. Melissa Gilkey, a three-time All-American women’s basketball player, is headed to Europe to play professionally this summer.

Christopher “Kit” Wellman, PhD, chair and professor of philosophy, has been named dean of academic planning for Arts & Sciences, announced Barbara A. Schaal, PhD, dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences. The appointment, which is part time, is effective July 1.

U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler visited the School of Medicine yesterday to learn more about research taking place on the Medical Campus and to hear campus leaders’ thoughts on the need for research funding. She is a member of the House’s armed services, agriculture and budget committees.
