New understanding of stroke damage may aid recovery

Stroke can lead to a wide range of problems such as depression and difficulty moving, speaking and paying attention. The prevailing wisdom was that damage to cells in the brain’s outer layer involved in higher brain functions was the culprit. But a new School of Medicine study, led by Maurizio Corbetta, MD, found evidence that stroke damage to “cables” inside the brain plays an important role.

Stigma of mental illness in India linked to poverty

The stigma surrounding people with severe mental illness in India leads to increased poverty among them, especially women, according to new research led by Jean-Francois Trani, PhD, of the Brown School. The results are published in The BMJ Open journal.

Unions must adapt to survive, scholar argues

With “Right to Work” now a law in Wisconsin and growing elsewhere, a majority of states soon may bar employees and unions from negotiating agreements that require non-members to contribute to the costs of representing them. For unions to survive, significant changes are necessary, argues Marion Crain, JD, vice provost and the Wiley B. Rutledge Professor of Law.

Alum discusses book on African-American leadership

Alumnus Ken Cooper, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, published his first book, “Portraits of Purpose: A Tribute to Leadership.” Among his profiles is fellow alum Henry Hampton, producer of “Eyes on the Prize.”

University again taking part in RecycleMania

The university is again participating in the national college recycling competition RecycleMania, which runs through March 28. Universities compete to divert the most material from landfills. Visit RecycleMania to check the rankings. There also will be an electronics recycling drive Friday, March 20.
