New committee to help shape diversity and inclusion strategy

Building largely on the momentum generated by “Race & Ethnicity: A Day of Discovery and Dialogue,” held here Feb. 5 and 6, a newly formed committee has been created to develop a strategy and action plan to help Washington University become more diverse, inclusive and welcoming.

School of Medicine, BJC HealthCare plan new office building

The School of Medicine and BJC HealthCare are planning to build a 12- to 14-story office building on the site of the Storz Building on the Medical Campus. The building will house the Washington University Center for Weight Management, offices for the dean and administrative staff, and corporate offices for BJC HealthCare.

Race matters in jury selection, scholar says

Given the importance that race and racial bias may play in certain cases, defense counsel must determine when and how to discuss issues of race during jury selection in order to be effective, criminal justice expert Peter Joy, JD, of the School of Law, argues. His piece appears in the Northwestern University Law Review.

Plato scholar Sedley to deliver Biggs Lecture

David Sedley, PhD, an internationally acclaimed Greek philosopher, will deliver the annual John and Penelope Biggs Lecture in the Classics for the Assembly Series at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 19, in Anheuser-Busch Hall’s Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom. The lecture, “What Is Plato’s Theory of Forms?” is free and open to the public.

Trustees meet, hear from medical school faculty about advances in cancer research

The Board of Trustees met last week and heard presentations from School of Medicine faculty about advances in cancer research, treatment and prevention. The board also received a report from Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton that included updates on administrative appointments, admissions, athletics and construction.
