Washington People: Lorena Smith

Serving students for five decades, Lorena Smith, 81, has done it all — prepared thousands of sandwiches, pulled pints of beer at the university’s long-gone campus bar and issued parking tickets. “Some things don’t change,” said Smith, whom the students call “Ms. Smitty.” “There have always been parking tickets, baby, always.”

Distinguished Faculty, Goldstein honors awarded

School of Medicine faculty members were honored with Distinguished Faculty Awards Feb. 18 for their dedication, talent and wide-ranging achievements. D. Katherine Grange, MD (left), received a Distinguished Clinician Award. Larry J. Shapiro, MD, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and dean of the medical school, congratulated award winners.

Washington University Symphony Orchestra performs music of Mozart, Sibelius and Grieg

The Washington University Symphony Orchestra, with student soloist Silas Hsu, will present early, reputation-making works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Jean Sibelius and Edvard Grieg at 7:30 tonight at the 560 Music Center.

Black Panthers documentary to be shown on campus Thursday

Stanley Nelson’s documentary “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of a Revolution,” will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, in Steinberg Auditorium. The screening is co-sponsored by Cinema St. Louis and by the African and African-American Studies program in Arts & Sciences; the Center for Diversity and Inclusion; and University Libraries’ Film and Media Archive.
