‘Day of Discovery and Dialogue’ over, but next steps continue​​​

The discovery was an important first step; the dialogue continues. That’s the takeaway more than 600 participants from within the university community heard in a unique, universitywide forum, “Race & Ethnicity: A Day of Discovery and Dialogue,” which took place Feb. 5 and 6.​​

Diabetes interventions should be localized, Brown School study finds

Factors associated with the prevalence of diabetes vary by geographic region in the United States, according to new research from the Brown School led by J. Aaron Hipp, PhD. The findings suggest that approaches to combating the disease should be localized.

England named Wolff Professor of Medicine

Sarah K. England, PhD, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has been named the inaugural Alan A. and Edith L. Wolff Professor of Medicine at the School of Medicine. Her work aims to reduce the frequency of preterm labor, a problem that affects 12 percent of births in the U.S.

Up next for Assembly Series: religious extremism and the case for reparations

The next two Assembly Series lectures will cover topics in today’s headlines. On Tuesday, Feb. 17, religious scholar Reza Aslan will address “Faith, Extremism and Democracy: Examining the Parallels of Religious Fundamentalism at Home and Abroad.” The next day, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates will explore “The Case for Reparations.”

Students can apply to be Mellon Mays fellows

The university’s Mellon Mays program is still accepting applications for the 2015 fellowship. The deadline is Friday, Feb. 13. The program aims to increase diversity in higher education and to encourage underrepresented students to pursue doctorates.
