Schaal chosen president-elect of AAAS

Barbara A. Schaal, PhD, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, has been elected president-elect of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest general scientific society. She begins her three-year term as an officer and member of the association’s Board of Directors’ Executive Committee on Feb. 17.

Washington People: Shin-ichiro Imai

Over the past three decades, Shin-ichiro Imai, MD, PhD, has shed light on the processes of aging and longevity as he has sought to help people maintain better health into their later years. Imai is a professor of developmental biology and of medicine at the School of Medicine.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research has announced the eight winners of the 2014 University Research Strategic Alliance (URSA) grants. The URSA program strives to foster collaborations across disciplines, departments and schools.

Financial tool developer wins Olin Cup

The top prize in the 2015 Olin Cup competition was awarded to Love Will Inc., a developer of virtual currency-based financial tools, at an awards ceremony last week. Four 2014 WashU graduates founded the company.

University police to offer self-defense training for women

Female members of the university community are invited to register for the RAD program, a 12-hour comprehensive self-defense program. Classes will be held Feb. 7, 14 and 21 in the Village House.
