New work by scientists including university biologist Petra Levin, PhD, shows that bacteria don’t double in mass before dividing as previously thought. Instead, they add a constant volume (or mass) no matter their initial size. A small cell adds the same volume as a large cell. By following this rule, a cell population quickly converges on a common size.

Meredith Evans, PhD, has been named associate university librarian for University Libraries. She oversees the Department of Special Collections, which includes the Film and Media Archive, Manuscripts, the Modern Graphic History Library, Preservation, Rare Books, and University Archives.

Thirty staff and faculty members from across the university have been selected to serve on the Solutions for Achieving Value and Efficiency (SAVE) committee. During the next year, SAVE committee teams will analyze ideas submitted by the university community and ultimately will present recommendations to university leaders.
